Arona is one of the major shopping and tourist centres of Lake Maggiore.
The historic centre is rich in characteristic buildings such as the Church of Santissimi Martiri, the Palace of Justice (15th century) with an arched porch. The neoclassical Villa Ponti, now a patrimony of the city, hosts exhibitions and conferences. In the past it hosted Napoleon Bonaparte, and it was the headquarters of Mondadori during the last world conflict.
The Rocca Borromea of Arona is a defensive building overlooking the Lake Maggiore; together with the twin Borromea fortress of Angera, it was one of the main strategic points of control of Lake Maggiore in ancient times.
